The Importance of Being Important (to yourself)

There is nothing wrong with plans and ambition, but the constant need for fulfilling these can turn us into self-criticizing machines that only assess performance and have no understanding for our own more subtle needs. Someone would say the needs of the soul, someone else of our deeper self, but independently of how we call this, we need to respect this deeper part of ourselves in order to preserve our mental health.

Taking care of others is in our nature. Humans are social creatures and our bare survival depends on our mutual cooperation and understanding. Although we need to create groups, which might become competitive as a consequence, our need to take care of each other is what makes us humans. Development of our social skills is in a close relationship with the development of our intelligence and our brains.

On the other hand, this care for others has its internal side in the form of self-care which, in the end, is of essential importance. Why is that so? First and foremost, taking care of yourself is a trademark of adulthood and that you can survive in a relative independence from others. However, taking care of yourself goes far beyond the basic needs and being independent. It has one much softer side that we often forget. Our internal voices towards ourselves tend to be too critical and demanding. Demanding success, demanding respect from others, demanding efficiency, demanding following up your plans. There is nothing wrong with plans and ambition, but the constant need for fulfilling these can turn us into self-criticizing machines that only assess performance and have no understanding for our own more subtle needs. Someone would say the needs of the soul, someone of our deeper self, but independently of how we call this, we need to respect this deeper part of ourselves in order to preserve our mental health.

Understanding and respecting your deeper self is not easy and many people do not want to recognize it and admit that they even have a softer side. The sole need to take a break and look at the sunshine, or listen the birds singing, the wind dancing with tree leaves, the clouds slowly passing the blue sky… Paying attention to small details of our existence is what feeds our souls. Thus, we do not need expensive spa centers to pamper our selves. There might be a much simpler solution for taking care of yourself.

Listen closely to this gentle voice and it will navigate you into the right direction. It may feel scary and ambiguous in the beginning, however with time, as you develop the skill of self-care and listening to your true needs and wants, you will become much stronger person, capable of helping others and capable of fulfilling your big plans and goals.
